History
Creation: Area code 647 was put into service on March 5, 2001 and was the 290th area code in service. It was one of 26 area codes introduced in 2001. In 2013, area code 437 was created from 647. It was the 7th area code in the province of Ontario. Ontario currently has 19 area codes. It was created to relieve the pressure on the 416 area code as the numbers in 416 were being exhausted.
Overlay: Prior to 1992, each area code served a geographic area and that geographic area had only a single area code. If the phone numbers available for an area code were nearly exhausted, the existing area code and geographic area would be split. However, the North American Number Plan Administrator (NANPA) started to create overlay area codes in 1992 – area codes that would serve the same geographic area. Area code 647 is an overlay area code for area code 416.
Mnemonics: Prior to 1995, the middle digit of area codes was restricted to a 0 or 1 which do not correspond to a letter on a phone’s dialing pad. So, only area codes created in 1995 or later can have a mnemonic. The mnemonics for area code 647 include MGP, MGQ, MGR, MGS, MHP, MHQ, MHR, MHS, MIP, MIQ, MIR, MIS, NGP, NGQ, NGR, NGS, NHP, NHQ, NHR, NHS, NIP, NIQ, NIR, NIS, OGP, OGQ, OGR, OGS, OHP, OHQ, OHR, OHS, OIP, OIQ, OIR, and OIS.
