History

Creation: Area code 437 was put into service on March 25, 2013 and was the 365th area code in service. It was one of 8 area codes introduced in 2013. It was the 12th area code in the province of Ontario. Ontario currently has 19 area codes. It was created to relieve the pressure on the 647 area code as the numbers in 647 were being exhausted.

Overlay: Prior to 1992, each area code served a geographic area and that geographic area had only a single area code. If the phone numbers available for an area code were nearly exhausted, the existing area code and geographic area would be split. However, the North American Number Plan Administrator (NANPA) started to create overlay area codes in 1992 – area codes that would serve the same geographic area.
