Creation: Area code 640 was put into service on September 17, 2018 and was the 405th area code in service. It was one of 6 area codes introduced in 2018. It was the 10th area code in the state of New Jersey. New Jersey currently has 10 area codes. It was created to relieve the pressure on the 609 area code as the numbers in 609 were being exhausted.

Overlay: Prior to 1992, each area code served a geographic area and that geographic area had only a single area code. If the phone numbers available for an area code were nearly exhausted, the existing area code and geographic area would be split.
